Work in The Netherlands

In order to apply for a job in The Netherlands you need the following:

  • BSN (Burgerservicenummer): a kind of social security number that you will receive once on the first time when you register yourself on a dutch address.
  • health insurance: like no other country in the EU, here in The Netherlands there is a compulsory health insurance besides the social and health taxes that will be deducted from your monthly salary. The costs begin around €120 per person per month for the most basic one.
  • work permit: only for citizens outside the EU (European Union) or EEA (European Economic Area).

 

Rent a house

The cheapest rent you will probably find in The Netherlands will cost you  around 300-500 € per month for a room in a shared house or apartment and begins around 650 – 1.000 € for a whole apartment or small house, depending on location. In big cities, like Amsterdam or Utrecht, the amount may be much higher.

 

In order to rent a place you need the following:

  • proof of income: a work contract for at least one year.
  • deposit: 1 month rent + GWE (gas, water, electra) costs for 1 month upfront.

Buy a house in The Netherlands

As crazy as it sounds but you have high chances of getting a mortgage in The Netherlands as an expat in the first years of living and working in this country if you have a good salary.  Because the salaries in the IT sector are quite high, buying a house can be a better option than renting if you are planning to say at least for 2 – 3 years.
